Shan State, Myanmar’s largest region, borders China, Laos, and Thailand and is a diverse area home to many ethnic groups. Historically a collection of independent states, it’s now largely rural with significant political and economic complexities, including ongoing influence from armed groups and neighboring China. While beautiful, the region has a history of conflict and remains a major opium-producing area, though production has recently declined. Key cities include the capital, Taunggyi, along with Lashio and Kengtung.Wikipedia
