St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, one of the largest and most significant churches in the world, was built starting in 1506 over the presumed tomb of the Apostle Peter. Located in Vatican City, it is an important pilgrimage site. Numerous famous artists such as Bramante, Michelangelo, and Bernini shaped the building, which has been inhabited by Popes since the 14th century, but is not the cathedral of Rome. Before the current basilica stood Old St. Peter's, built around 324, whose remains have been uncovered during excavations. The new building was consecrated in 1626 and combines elements of various architectural styles, including an impressive nave and Michelangelo's famous dome. Wikipedia
