Kaliningrad, formerly Königsberg, is a unique Russian city and the heart of Kaliningrad Oblast, a geographically isolated region between Lithuania and Poland. Founded in 1255 by the Teutonic Knights, it boasts a rich and complex history, having been part of Poland, Prussia, and Germany before becoming Soviet and then Russian in 1945. Heavily damaged in WWII, the city was rebuilt and renamed in honor of Mikhail Kalinin. Today, Kaliningrad is a vital Russian port on the Baltic Sea, a key naval base, and a growing industrial and cultural center, attracting visitors with its fascinating blend of historical influences.
